Water Features

Water features are becoming an increasingly common addition to many homes that currently house a swimming pool. While many individuals remain happy to sit around their aquatic rectangle and enjoy the simplicity of their pool design, the more adventurous pool owner is embarking on a world of discovery that allows them to enjoy a succession of extra features that bring existing pool installations and new projects up to date.

With many pools now sitting within extravagant projects that maximize the use of available space, a series of hardscape and softscape designs implement the addition of water features as the finishing touch on an installation.

But what benefits do these luxuries actually bring to the average pool environment?

First, many water features are able to add to an existing theme or landscape. This gives pool owners the feeling of an extensive project having a certain element of completion about it. Also, many water features are visible and active when the pool isn’t even in use. This provides a pleasant aesthetic appeal and moving features also add an element of sound and relaxation to an outdoor environment.

Finally, some of these items actually have benefits for pool users and many of these also provide a relaxing or therapeutic edge that maximizes the enjoyment to be gleaned from a swimming pool.

There are a wide variety of water features that can be installed as part of an existing pool or as an extension to a new project or refurbishment program:

Bubblers

Often known as spring jets, bubblers provide an excellent method of oxygenating a pool and this helps to increase the overall quality of the water within it. These additions actually require very little in terms of water intake and this makes them surprisingly inexpensive to operate around the clock.

Spillways
A spillway allows for the transfer of a body of water into another location at a lower level by mechanical operation or displacement of water volume. These are particularly common water features on outdoor spas that are built as a staggered structure.

Waterfalls

Incredibly therapeutic and with the ability to be beautifully decorated, a waterfall carries out the same function as a spillway but on a much larger scale. Often, a waterfall is simply added to a pool design as an ornamental feature and these are frequently emphasized by the addition of rocks, plants and even wildlife. Waterfalls transfer large volumes of water and this makes them slightly more expensive to operate.

Statues and Ornaments

The possibilities are endless and these artistic water features can range from spitting fish to water-pouring cherubs. Statues can provide a wonderful ornamental value to any pool or surrounding garden. Operation cost is usually very low due to the small amounts of water transfer involved. If overflow runs into a small urn or birdbath, there is the added benefit of attracting birds and other wildlife to a garden.

Laminar Jets

These provide a fascinating addition to a pool and can draw in guests with their wonderfully addictive appeal. Attempting to grab the jets of water can be compulsive and when these features are fitted alongside fiber-optic lighting, the effects can be especially pleasing in the later stages of the day.

There are many other exciting options that can be included as part of a pool installation or within the surrounding environment and all of these can be accentuated with a wide range of lighting displays and ornamental additions.

Surprisingly, many of these features can be quickly added to an existing pool design with minimal inconvenience although larger projects can involve extensive refurbishment or design work.
